Career Exploration Opportunities

Emergency Management Career Explorer Post: There is a brand-new Explorer Post opportunity with the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency. Students in this program will meet on the second Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM and will interact with a variety of agencies throughout Jefferson County, including Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS, and the National Weather Service. In addition to learning about a variety of career options, participants will train for certification as an emergency response unit that can be called into service to support the EMA in carrying out its mission in times of community crisis.

 

Students interested in this program should attend the kick-off Open House next Thursday, October 11th, 6:30 p.m. at the Emergency Management Agency’s headquarters (located at 709 19th Street North 35203 – in the basement of the Jefferson County Courthouse). If you plan to attend please notify them through email at emainfo@jccal.org or call 205-254-2039.  

 

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is an opportunity for any student (ages 12-20) interested in pursuing a career in the military or in any flight related or STEM field.  As a member of the CAP cadets are provided leadership opportunities, character development, physical fitness, and emergency services training.  The CAP Open House is September 15, 2018 from 10-2PM.  Please see the attached flyer for more information. 

 

HEALTHCARE CAREER EXPLORER POSTS: There are 2 incredible Career Explorer Posts for students interested in learning more about Health Careers, UAB Hospital and Shelby Baptist Hospital, and both scheduled their Fall kick-off Open Houses: UAB is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11th, and Shelby Baptist is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18th.  Health Career Exploring is a program for young people who are interested in learning more about careers in healthcare. Explorers meet each month to learn about diverse careers available in the health care arena and interact with leadership from all areas of the hospital such as physicians, nursing technologists, and administration.
